Description:
The Nigeria Certificate in Education programme is a highly structured and heavily regulated course with a strong element of continuous assessment and external moderation. Basically, a student takes two teaching subjects e.g. Maths and Physics or English and History, throughout the course. In addition a common course in Education is taken, also as a major subject, for the three years of the programme and Practical teaching is also given 'major' status though this takes place in well defined teaching practice sessions. Two other subjects are taken at minor level, one is a compulsory course in General English while the other can be chosen form a wide range of teaching subjects.

The course is divided into five parts, consisting of an introductory Contact Term followed by four subsequent parts each consisting of a Correspondence Term and an associated Contact Term. Each Contact Term lasts for eight weeks and each Correspondence Term for nine months. The Contact and Correspondence Terms are each seen as being equivalent to one term of the full-time NCE, which has a total of nine
terms.

There are in all 14 major and 6 minor subjects on the curriculum. The major subjects include:

1. Arabic (offered only at Minna College of Education)
2. Christian Religions Studies (CRS)
3. Education
4. English
5. Geography
6. Hausa
7. History
8. Islamic Studies
9. Mathematics
10. Physical and Health Education (Double major)
11. Primary Education Studies (PES)
12. Science Education
13. Social Studies
14. Yoruba (offered only at Oro College of Education)

Home Economics is offered as a double major.

The minor subjects are: Basic, Physical and Health Education; Creative Arts, General English; Integrated Science, Library Science and
Mathematics for Science.

Assessment includes assignments.

Entrance qualifications: Applicants should hold the Grade II Teachers' Certificate and must be a serving teacher.

Media and methods employed: Printed text, face-to-face tutorials.
Printed correspondence texts prepared by/for institution, practical work, 8 week contact sessions (during vacations), seminars, face-to-face tutoring. The four correspondence terms shall also be regarded as periods of Practical Teaching. Students may, at any time during these periods, be visited in their schools for the purposes of supervision, assessment and award of grades which will contribute to their final NCE marks in Practical Teaching. School visits may be complemented with mini-teaching, micro-teaching or any other form of student-teaching activities organized by the programme co-ordinators during contact terms.

Administrative information:
On successful completion of this 4 year 3 month programme students will be awarded the Nigeria Certificate of Education.
